Skin needs balance. Personally, I’m one of those people who don’t take much care of their skin. Unfortunately, I don’t really take care of my skin on a regular basis. It’s definitely not good. However, it is also not good to overload your skin with routine care and a lot of products.
Less is sometimes more
Excessive skin care can lead to a lot of damage. It can cause sensitivity, irritation or worsen skin problems. This is because each skin care product contains specific ingredients designed to address specific skin issues. Too many active ingredients can overwhelm the skin and upset the natural balance. Always make sure to use creams and other skin care products only as often as recommended.
The natural microbiome
Creams, scrubs and other beauty products can be beneficial, but it’s important to remember that skin also has a natural microbiome. The skin is home to a diverse community of microorganisms. They play an important role in skin health. It is therefore definitely not a good idea to over-cleanse the skin. It is definitely not advisable to use aggressive exfoliants. Personally, I primarily use pure water to cleanse my skin. I use it to wash my face morning and night. I use special products only very sporadically and I make sure that they are natural products.
The most common problem
One of the most common problems associated with excessive skin care is irritated skin. If your skin products contain retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids, you really need to use them with caution. Excessive use leads to reddening or peeling of the skin. Discomfort may also occur. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology highlights that frequent application of strong active ingredients can disrupt the skin barrier, leading to increased sensitivity (Kumar et al., 2022).
Beware of allergies
Another thing is that there are allergens lurking in virtually all cosmetic products. A survey conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology found that a significant percentage of cosmetic users experience adverse reactions, with many attributing these problems to overuse of products (American Academy of Dermatology, 2023). Symptoms can range from mild irritation to severe allergic reactions. Clearly, not everyone will be harmed by the same thing. Therefore, it is always a good idea to try a new product on only part of the skin to avoid a severe reaction.

It’s clear that beauty products can boost our self-confidence. Personal care products can increase aesthetic appeal. Above all, however, we need to think about the implications of using all products for human health. While not all products are dangerous, their regular use means that we should pay more attention to cumulative exposure to poisons.
Often it is marketing
Unfortunately, consumers are often misled. Manufacturers, of course, pay marketing specialists to try to sell the product and show it in the best light. They highlight the benefits and ignore the risks. Tactically, they gloss over them. Customers then believe in the safety of the products. Yes, safety is regulated, but loophole regulation allows many potentially dangerous chemicals to become part of our everyday lives.
This means that we as consumers should educate ourselves and seek out natural and organic alternatives whenever possible. Another thing is that regulators should tighten up safety regulations.
