Cats are peculiar and moody and it is often difficult to recognize what is on their minds. They express their love in strange ways and their behaviour often says otherwise. However, they can use their senses to “predict” what will happen. The details of their body language will tell you hours in advance that an event is going to happen.
As the owner of two cats, Rami, a black male, and Luna, a black and white female, I have experienced different behaviors that have raised questions in my mind. While they were cuddling or resting one moment, within seconds it was as if they were struck by lightning and their body language completely changed. Ears pricked up, hissing, staring into an empty corner, or tail wagging. This naturally made me curious and a certain amount of uncertainty. But as the experts explain, there’s a reason for this behaviour. Even though I didn’t recognize anything, my four-legged pets sensed an event was about to happen. And it’s moments like these that raise the awareness that cats have extremely keen senses and know what’s coming.
Cats have been given the best: unique senses
Cats have acquired some really unique and extremely fine senses over the course of evolution that help them survive. They use them to hunt, protect themselves and adapt to new conditions. And it is thanks to these senses that they perceive the changes that humans experience much later.
Their highly developed hearing allows them to hear sounds that the human ear cannot detect. Their advantage is their sense of smell, as they have up to 200 million olfactory cells. You will also notice that your cats often move their snout in the air as if trying to pick up all the scents around them. This happens thanks to the Jacobson’s organ, which analyzes specific chemical signals such as pheromones. The whiskers are then used to orient them in space.

If the cat starts to exhibit unusual behaviour, it means that it has picked up unfamiliar sounds, vibrations or movements. By these signals, it expresses that something is different than usual. By detecting changes in atmospheric pressure and their sensitive sense of smell, they can “anticipate” rain, a thunderstorm, the arrival of a visitor or similar event. At the same time, they could potentially detect the state of your health.
I’ve noticed many times with my cat that she suddenly panics, runs, hides or hisses into the void. Experts say that this behaviour is usually due to noise, an unfamiliar smell or vibrations. Staring in one direction is also a common symptom. These symptoms are caused by movements behind walls, in stairwells or anywhere in close proximity to the house. Refusal of food can also be an indicator, especially when cats are stressed, smell an unfamiliar odour or have had their feeding area changed.
Their perception may be related to events that affect you, but also to their health. If cats are suffering from a mental or physical problem, these signals always come several hours before they get worse.
Their sense of “anticipation” works even in disasters. There is some debate about their ability to detect an incoming earthquake, although no confirmed studies have proven that they have penetrated the prophets’ craft. This is due to P-waves, which they sense much earlier than we do.
Their sentience is almost magical.
Although I’m aware that cats are truly unique and mysterious creatures, I would never have thought that they would be able to see into the future. However, one evening confirmed to me that some things cannot be understood and will forever remain hidden in the space between heaven and earth. I was lying down at the time, as I was not feeling well. One of the cats kept clinging to me, cuddling and looking searchingly into my face. I wondered what was going through her mind. As soon as I went to bed, she followed me and lay down next to me again. I felt like she was checking up on me. About three hours later, my condition worsened, prompting a visit to the emergency room. Here the doctor told me that I was dehydrated and had significantly low blood pressure. That’s when I realized that my cat had sensed a problem before I recognized that something was wrong with my body. However, there is no magic involved, she could only sense a change in heart rate, different skin smell and other bodily cues.
