For many people, the first thing they reach for after a long and tiring day is a glass of wine, a beer or a cocktail. Alcohol has become a kind of social synonym for relaxation and a way to relieve stress. But therein lies the problem – the short-term relief it brings comes at a price. More and more experts are warning that drinking as a form of relaxation is more of a trap than a route to relief. There are much healthier rituals that can relax the body and mind, and have much more positive effects.

Alcohol has a quick effect on the body and mind: it releases tension, reduces anxiety and can make us feel like we have finally ‘switched off’. But this effect is not permanent, and it is deceptive.

Even short-term drinking disrupts the quality of our sleep, increases the risk of anxiety and impairs our ability to recover. The World Addiction Centres warn that using alcohol as a crutch to calm down can lead to progressively higher doses – and, in the worst cases, addiction.

And it’s not just heavy drinkers who have problems. According to the Cleveland Clinic, even casual consumption of alcoholic beverages can increase the threat of heart problems, diabetes or fertility problems. In addition, studies published in recent years show that regular drinking at the end of the day leads to poorer sleep and thus poorer mental resilience. Paradoxically, a person who wants to get rid of stress is caught in a vicious circle.

Alternatives to drinking.

Fortunately, there are many healthy and enjoyable ways to relax and regenerate without a single drop of alcohol. What are they?

  • Physical activity

Exercise, whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga or tennis, is a great way to release tension and flush out endorphins, the happy hormones that naturally dampen stress. Plus, movement can help clear your head and improve your mood.

  • Reading books or listening to music

Instead of mindlessly scrolling between posts across social media, sit back and get reading – any good book will help take your mind off everyday problems.

In the same way, music can release dopamine – the same chemical released when you drink alcohol – giving you a sense of well-being.

  • Connecting with nature

Being in nature has a calming effect, reducing tension and encouraging you to find inner peace – even a simple walk in the park or sitting in the garden can do wonders for your wellbeing.

And if you have a pet, cuddle up with it. Simply petting your dog or cat lowers stress hormone levels and in turn increases oxytocin, which helps you relax.

  • Dedicating yourself to your hobbies

Whether it’s cooking, drawing, knitting or gardening, immersing yourself in activities you enjoy can be very therapeutic. It can help distract you from negative thoughts and it also brings a sense of purpose.

  • Meditation

Many people refuse to meditate, claiming they don’t have the patience for it. In reality, however, it’s a simple habit that can make a huge difference to your mental wellbeing – meditation can rid you of unnecessary thinking and stress.

  • Swap it for a soft drink

If you like to get together with friends, you don’t have to give up your social life just because you want to avoid alcohol. Have a non-alcoholic cocktail, flavoured water or opt for a soothing herbal tea. You’ll enjoy the same company, but without the negative side effects.
