For most of us, shopping in supermarkets is as commonplace as going to the toilet. We usually don’t even think about the shopping process. However, we should think about how we put items from the basket to the belt. Personally, I try to unload the goods in a way that is also convenient to put in the bag. My daughter, who wants to help me with this, puts the goods on the belt in a completely undirected way. According to the cashiers, however, the order of the products is important.
Why is it important?
Of course, it’s just an unwritten rule. It’s just that the order of the products on the checkout belt affects the speed of checkout and, above all, the condition of the food and other items you take home. According to the cashiers, improper order can result in cracked packaging and other inconveniences. Logically, it only takes a few extra seconds to stack the goods.
When to start unloading
But let’s start with when is the right time to start unloading your goods onto the belt. If the person in front of you is still unloading their purchase onto the conveyor belt, you should wait. I always have the urge to unload my groceries as soon as possible so as not to delay. However, on second thought, it can stress out the person in front of me. It’s always important to find out how many products the person in front of you still needs to unload and whether they have enough room on the belt. Alternatively, it’s a good idea to ask if it’s okay to start unloading your purchase already. Of course, the location of the dividing tape should be a matter of course.

That being said, when unloading food and other items onto the belt, you should consider the order of the items. It is a good idea to put large and heavy items at the top. It is logical. If you store your groceries right away in bags like I do, you can put those items down. This way the more prone, lighter and more fragile foods won’t break. It’s also a good idea to sort groups of items on the belt. For example, frozen goods, dairy, baked goods, fruits and vegetables, and drugstore items.
Debate on social media
There are even debates on social media about the best way to arrange food and other goods on the conveyor belt. Personal chef Charles Hunter III posed the question: “Do you organize your groceries on the conveyor belt?” Dozens of social network X users responded. One woman said that everything evens out based on temperature. “I pre-organize in my cart – raw meat together, frozen stuff together to keep each other cold, etc. – and then load it on the conveyor belt accordingly,” she wrote.
However, some users organize things in a way that makes it easy to check items on a receipt, for example. Others said they put groceries in a way that the fragile and light items go back in the cart first so they are loaded last. No one, however, admitted to unloading purchases in any chaotic or haphazard way. Editor Emi Boscamp joined the discussion. She confessed that weight wins out and things are trying to maintain. The last things she puts on her belt are the ones she bought to go out to eat or drink.
Discussion on Reddit
A similar discussion on the topic also flared up on the Reddit platform. One discussant confessed that she puts groceries on her belt loosely in the order she wants to pack them. However, she puts the heavy stuff first and also puts the frozen stuff together. Another discussant reportedly unloads things from heaviest to lightest. Another platform user agrees, adding that he always puts eggs and bread on the belt last.
