Archaeology is a discipline that helps us uncover history. It provides insight into the lives of our ancestors and their way of life. To celebrate the contribution of archaeology to humanity, International Archaeology Day is celebrated on 18 October. How did this day come about and what is its significance?

A look into the past

Archaeology is the study of the ancient and recent human past, using material remains to gain knowledge. Thus, this holiday brings together all enthusiasts of history and the mysteries that await hidden underground. It is also an opportunity to spread awareness about the work of archaeologists and their discoveries.

International Archaeology Day was established by the Archaeological Institute of America in 2011. It was intended to serve as a global networking event for archaeologists, scientists, museums, universities, and various organizations. They could share the results of their discoveries and research together. The first edition alone attracted thousands of people, and since then more and more institutions and enthusiasts have joined every year, organizing or participating in lectures, field trips and many other events. Currently, more than forty countries are involved.

Archaeology is not just about excavations

When people say archaeology, many think of people using tools to uncover fascinating finds. But archaeology is a much more complex discipline and is closely related to history itself, geology, anthropology, as well as chemistry and the use of modern technology. Nowadays, technology is an essential component as it can explore sites and the underground.

The aim is to educate and inspire

International Archaeology Day is all about educating everyone, regardless of age. The range of projects and events is really wide. People can experience first-hand the work of an archaeologist on a simulated excavation, as well as interactive exhibitions, film screenings, lectures and courses in experimental archaeology. At the same time, they try to show that archaeology is not boring at all and can be fascinating and very rewarding.

The importance of archaeology for the present

But is archaeology as important today as it was in the past? Although it may seem that everything has been discovered long ago, this is not the case. Even the most insignificant and seemingly insignificant artefact can offer an insight into the lives of our ancestors. Archaeology is thus open to new challenges and discoveries that can change history.

However, when an artefact is found, ethical considerations must be taken into account, as each must be recorded and preserved. Unfortunately, however, it is quite common for illegal excavations and trafficking of valuable artefacts to occur. Often, however, there is devaluation, which makes it all the more important to protect cultural heritage.

A past for the future

International Archaeology Day shows that the past and the present are interlinked. Revealing history is one thing, but it also has some lessons for how we should behave. Our ancestors often faced similar challenges, and the remains we find can provide inspiration and explanations. History is all around us. We should commemorate this day as it celebrates the thirst for knowledge, curiosity and inspiration.
