Keeping up with the times is undoubtedly important, but let’s face it – not every trend suits everyone, whether it’s clothing or hair styling. What looks great on an Instagram model or your favourite actress might not work on us. However, the key to choosing the right hairstyle is taking into account not only the colour or texture of your hair, but also the proportions of your face.

Theright haircut can do wonders – for example, visually slimming a round face, softening sharper features or adding volume to an oval shape. Do you know what yours is?

How to find out your face shape

The easiest way to determine the shape of your face is to stand in front of a mirror, pull your hair back and trace the outline of your face with, for example, an eyeliner, lipstick or washable marker. In particular, focus on how wide/high your forehead is, how prominent or not your cheekbones and jawline are.

Because that’s what distinguishes several basic types:

  • Oval: the face is longer than wide, the forehead is wider than the jaw, the chin is rounded.
  • Round: the length and width are approximately the same, the features are soft and rounded
  • Square (angular): the ratio of length to width is almost one to one, strong, even angular jaw, sharp contours
  • Heart-shaped (triangular): broader forehead, pointed chin
  • Diamond: narrow forehead and jaw, prominent cheekbones, pointed chin
  • Rectangular: the width of the forehead, cheeks and jawline are almost the same – an elongated version of the square type

What cuts suit each type

If you complement your face shape with the right hairstyle, you can accentuate not only your eyes but also your cheekbones, soften or accentuate certain features or optically balance your facial proportions.

1. Oval face

This shape is considered ideal because it has balanced and even proportions. You don’t have to be afraid to experiment – from long layers and waves to sleek mikado to bolder pixie cuts. Just beware of hair that’s too long without layers, which will only make your look visually more elongated.

2. Round face

Round faces look soft and youthful, which means their owners often look younger. That’s why they can afford more playful hairstyles that enhance this effect.

The aim is to add optical length and create a more oval impression. For example, side-parting, asymmetrical cuts or longer layers around the cheeks work well. Hairstyles with volume at the crown or a high ponytail also look good. Avoid straight bangs, however, which will accentuate the roundness.

3. Square face

This face shape is characterised by a particularly pronounced jawline. This should be softened, for example, by soft waves, a layered mikado or a hairstyle with a side parting. Longer, but fine and thin bangs cut on an angle also work well. On the other hand, short straight cuts with a sharp line can look too severe.

4. Heart-shaped face

A broader forehead and narrower chin certainly require a balance, so adjustments that add volume to the chin and jawline are ideal – for example, a longer mikado, soft curls, blunt bangs or side-swept bangs that soften the width of the forehead. Try to avoid overly tight ponytails, which tend to accentuate the upper part of your face.

5. Diamond face

For prominent cheekbones in the diamond look, a hairstyle that visually widens the forehead and jawline is suitable. Airier styles, hair combed to the side or waves around the cheeks look good. If you want a short cut, opt for a voluminous pixie with longer bangs or a chin-length bob cut.

6. Rectangular face

For longer and narrower shapes, it is important to balance the proportions so that the face looks wider than it actually is. For example, rich waves, layers around the shoulders or curtained bangs suit them. But semi-long hairstyles with volume to the sides also look great, visually shortening the length of the face. Overly sleek hairstyles or long uncut hair are not recommended.

Each face shape simply has its own strengths and cuts that can accentuate them – while almost anything will suit an oval face, a round one needs to be visually lengthened and a square one needs to be softened.

All you need to do is find the right hairstyle that not only enhances your individual beauty, but also makes you feel great and natural.
