As the Christmas season approaches, it is the time when the Christmas markets officially open. In Brazil specifically, however, they are markedly different from the traditional European markets. The way they are held is mainly influenced by the tropical climate. How do they take place in Brazil and what is typical about them?

Christmas markets in Brazil

If the phrase Christmas markets makes you think of snow, punch, Christmas trees and garlands to the sound of carols, your image couldn’t be further away. At least within Brazil, as the Christmas markets(Feiras de Natal) here are quite different. They are instead characterised by outdoor festivals, concerts or performances by folklore groups. The atmosphere is complemented by light shows and an energetic mood.

Renowned Christmas markets are held in major cities such as São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, but also in other smaller towns. Here you will find not only typical Christmas decorations, but also Brazilian sweets and dishes. These include, in particular, the sweet bread with fruit and chocolate called panettone or the sweet toast rabanada served with sugar and cinnamon. A number of Christmas villages have also sprung up all over the country to keep children and adults alike entertained. The atmosphere of fun is completed not only by carousels but also by meetings with Papa Noel, the Father of Christmas, who is the equivalent of Santa Claus.

Christmas markets in different regions

Christmas markets vary from region to region. The largest and most famous Christmas markets in the country are held in São Paulo. Brazilians flock here from all corners of the country to see the magnificent light installations and shop at the stalls. International vendors also sell products here. A slightly more traditional look, referring to European markets, can be found in the city of Curitiba. People can view nativity scenes and other Christian decorations to the accompaniment of Christmas music. A more relaxed mood and summer atmosphere can be found in Rio de Janeiro, where Christmas markets are mainly in the spirit of summer festivals.

Modern trends and digital markets

Increasingly, however, the modern age is also shaping the appearance of markets. Online shopping is now quite commonplace and people are choosing it much more often because it is convenient and time-saving. Some cities are even organising hybrid markets. This means that it is possible to shop at stalls using online orders or QR codes.

Conclusion

Christmas markets are usually an opportunity to shop, however, in Brazil they are taking on a much bigger character. They offer their own unique atmosphere, which is partly influenced by European culture. The essence is mainly the lights, music and time spent with loved ones.
