Around the age of forty, most of us start to notice subtle changes in our skin – it loses elasticity, becomes drier, and fine lines and wrinkles deepen. It’s not just the years that are to blame, but also stress, sleep, hormones and the pace of life that don’t give our skin much room to regenerate.
Many women at this stage of life choose to fight aging, often with invasive procedures or expensive products that promise the impossible. Yet there are a number of ways to support the skin naturally.
Below, you’ll find six things that distinguish women whose skin looks fresh even in their 40s from those who constantly struggle.
1. Sun protection: the first step against ageing
Dermatologists agree that up to 80% of the visible signs of aging are caused by the sun. Photoaging is not caused by age, but by UV rays – which is why daily protection is a staple of any routine. It’s not enough to reach for sunscreen only on holiday in summer. You really need to protect your skin every day, even when it’s cloudy or you’re sitting by the window in the office.
So use products containing SPF 30 or higher, and apply them to your neck, décolletage and the backs of your hands – the places where age first shows. The sun may give us a good mood and vitamin D, but our skin needs to be treated with respect and care.
2. Vitamin C and antioxidant: the secret weapon for glowing skin
After forty, it is no longer enough to apply cream to your face. The skin needs active substances to help restore its structure and protect it from external influences. One of the most powerful helpers is vitamin C – an antioxidant that helps with collagen formation, lightens pigment spots and protects the skin from free radicals. Combined with other antioxidants such as vitamins E, A or green tea extracts, it can restore elasticity and brightness.
3. Hydration from inside and out
While twenty-somethings deal with excess sebum, forty-somethings are more concerned with dryness and loss of elasticity. The sebaceous glands work more slowly and the skin becomes thinner. It is therefore important to replenish moisture not only with cream, but also with a drinking regime. We should drink at least two litres of water a day so that the body has something to draw on.
Look for hyaluronic acid, ceramides, honey or peptides in cosmetics – these substances keep water in the skin. Always apply cream to damp skin, ideally after toner or moisturiser.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that even a simple pillowcase can play a role – change it at least twice a week to give your skin a clean and soft environment for nighttime regeneration.

Of the substances that have proven themselves in skin care, retinol is one of the most effective. It promotes collagen production, accelerates skin cell renewal and improves skin texture. Clinical studies confirm that with regular use, retinol can visibly soften fine lines and even skin tone in just a few weeks.
However, it’s best to incorporate it into your routine gradually – use it once a week at first, ideally in the evening, and combine it with a nourishing moisturiser that reduces irritation. It’s the regularity and the right combination of products that will determine whether retinol will give you healthier, smoother-looking skin.
5. Sleep, exercise and the microbiome: beauty starts from within
Skin quality is closely linked to overall lifestyle. Sleep deprivation, prolonged stress or irregular diet can quickly affect the appearance of the skin – it loses brightness, elasticity and appears puffy and dull in tone. During sleep, the body releases melatonin, a hormone responsible for cell regeneration and tissue repair. So even short or poor quality sleep can disrupt the skin’s natural regenerative processes.
The gut microbiome also plays an important role, the balance of which affects not only digestion but also the condition of the skin. A balanced gut flora helps to reduce inflammatory processes and promotes detoxification of the body, which has a positive effect on the clarity and appearance of the skin. It is therefore advisable to include fibre-rich foods, fermented products and plenty of vegetables in the diet. Regular exercise then helps blood circulation and oxygenation of the skin – the result is a healthier and more natural freshness.
6. Alternating heat and cold for more supple skin
Skin benefits not only from regular care, but also from alternating temperatures. Briefly cooling the face with cold water or ice packs helps to tighten pores, firm contours and improve blood circulation. Conversely, heat in the form of steam or sauna loosens pores and allows for a more thorough cleansing. These simple practices can easily be incorporated into home care – just a few minutes a day can produce visible results with long-term repetition.
Facial yoga or massage using gua sha tools or a face roller is also a popular part of modern skincare. Gentle mechanical stimulation promotes lymph flow, reduces swelling and improves the supply of nutrients to skin cells. In addition, regular exercise helps torelease tension in the facial muscles, which translates into more natural and fresher skin.
