At first glance, it looks like an ordinary workbook equation. But once you get into it, you’ll find that any overlooked detail can turn the result upside down. Are you ready?
Mathematics has a strange quality – the more confidently you enter an example, the bigger the surprise. Equations with multiple brackets require precision, patience and the ability to hold several operations in your head at once. It’s not just about counting, it’s about discipline of thought. And that’s what makes them a great workout for the brain – no matter when you last opened an algebra textbook.
What’s in store for you today?
Today’s equation is: 6x + 3(2x – 7) = 8(1 + x) – 3x + 2. There is a parenthesis on the left side waiting to be multiplied, and you will find it on the right side as well. The challenge is to find the value of x – and get to it without error. You set the pace, but it’s not worth the rush.

Do you think you calculated the example correctly? Now you can check.
The correct result is therefore x = 31/7, approximately 4.43 in decimal
We start by multiplying the parentheses. Left side: 3(2x – 7) = 6x – 21, so 6x + 6x – 21 = 12x – 21. Right side: 8(1 + x) = 8 + 8x, so 8 + 8x – 3x + 2 = 5x + 10. The equation now looks like this: 12x – 21 = 5x + 10.
